Finally,

The great man says : "I'm finished now"

other quotes from article:

"But to go out in Sunderland, score and get the best result in 50 years wasn't a bad way to go."

"When I was a young boy I wanted to play for Newcastle United, I wanted to wear the number nine shirt and I wanted to score goals at St James' Park,"

"I've lived my dream and I realise how lucky I've been to have done that."

I still thing England need the strength up front. Owen and Defoe can be anything but tall up front and Beanpole isnt a great header of the football.

The great man should have stayed on , at least should have come outta retirement to play in the WC '06.

I know its kinda ambitious, but that is why he is Alan Shearer.

yes, it was aussome while it lasted. Expect probably for his time at blackburn and the '94 season. Other than that as long as he served slavishly for a team which was never going to make full use of his talent, it was OK with us.

As for England, that was always impossible. COnsidering that he didn't buckle to the tremendous pressure put by the media/coaching staff during WC 2002 - this time it would have taken a miracle. And frankly the most methinks he could have done was provide impact value and experience but comin on later.
